CEEERT joins another international coproduction shot in Greece
Harmonia, a six episode psychological thriller series set in a luxury wellness retreat controlled by AI, has begun shooting in Athens, Greece, ITV Studios announced today.
Niamh Algar (The Iris Affair, Malpractice, The Virtues) stars as the AI's creator, Shona Casey. She is joined by legendary French cinema star Fanny Ardant (The Woman Next Door, 8 Women) as the resort's former owner, and Chloe Lea (Dune: Prophecy, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) as a young member of staff that the AI becomes obsessed with. Further cast includes Oliver Chris (Rivals, The Crown), Abubakar Salim (House of the Dragon, Raised by Wolves), Goran Bogdan (Legacy of Spies, The Last Panthers), Theo Augier (XO Kitty, Jay Kelly) and George Ioannides (Guys and Dolls, Industry). Completing the ensemble are Greek stars Pygmalion Dadakaridis (The Other Me, Rififi), rising TV and theatre actor Konstantinos Zografos (The Judge, Derti) Antigoni Frida (Grand Hotel, Sauté) and introducing newcomer Zoe-Stella Nikolaou. Harmonia is set in an AI-controlled, high-end luxury resort and wellness facility, where technology meets escapism and every guest's desire can be fulfilled. It reflects things we all aspire to, but also fear. It's a modern-day Frankenstein story of a scientist who would be God, and their extraordinary creation, where it becomes increasingly unclear whether the AI is the monster, or whether the humans are. The series is created by Peter Carlton, Lefteris Charitos, Amanda Livanou and Hanna Jameson. Lefteris Charitos, director of Wild Bees, one of Greek television’s biggest ever successes, directs all six episodes. Hanna Jameson, best-selling author of The Last and writer on the upcoming Netflix series, The Undertow, is lead writer, with episodes from Alki Papastathopoulos and Panayotis Christopoulos. Lefteris Charitos, director, said: “Harmonia is a director’s dream project. A genre piece based on strong characters. The opportunity to work in Greece, my home country, with a stellar international cast, makes me want to tell this unique story and share a take on a theme that is more relevant than anything now.” Hanna Jameson, lead writer, said: “With this project, I had the chance to tell a truly meaningful story full of funny, strange, and complicated characters, reminiscent of the legendary genre shows I grew up watching. It’s been so exciting to explore how our relationship with technology has changed so fast in such a short period of time, evolving faster than our ability to understand the personal and global consequences. When I’m gripped by a great show everything else falls away, the house could burn down around me and I wouldn’t notice, and I hope that people feel the same way about Harmonia.” Harmonia is produced in association with and distributed internationally by ITV Studios. It is co-financed by ITV Studios, and Greek public broadcaster ERT, with development support from the Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Fund and Creative Europe Media. The predominantly English-language series is an international co-production between the UK's Warp Films, most recently producers of Netflix global phenomenon Adolescence, and award-winning Greek feature film producers Neda Film (Pity, Gorgonà). Peter Carlton, Senior Executive Producer, and Peter Balm, Managing Director, both executive producers on Harmonia for Warp Films, said: "At Warp, we're drawn to bold, distinctive stories that combine burning questions with ambitious genre storytelling. That's true from Four Lions through to Adolescence, and it's no different with Harmonia. The series combines the best of British and Greek creativity, with a ground-breaking international finance model bringing Hanna’s writing to life through Lefteris’ direction. Backed by ITV Studios from the start, we're thrilled to have brought together such a sparkling international cast." Julie Meldal-Johnsen, EVP Global Content, ITV Studios, said: "Harmonia is a visceral series of delicious suspense and spectacular sunshine, of biting humor and shocking horror. In an entertaining and compelling way it confronts the challenges of tomorrow, between humanity's control over the ubiquitous technology around us, an uneasy coexistence, or something far more dangerous. Harmonia pulls no punches, and we know that in the hands of Warp, Neda, Lefteris, Hanna and our brilliant cast, international audiences will be captivated by its thrills and shocks, its unsettling questions, and its utterly gripping characters." Amanda Livanou, Founder and Isavella Alopoudi, Producer, both Executive Producers on Harmonia for Neda Film, said: “Harmonia is the gift that keeps on giving. What started as a crazy idea written hastily on a page has, four years later, transformed into our first foray into television drama with the best credentials possible. Writing these lines well into the second week of shooting we are incredibly proud and happy of the work we are producing – and the people we are working with. That includes our fabulous partners at Warp, ITVS and ERT, Lefteris, Hanna and the writing team, the spectacular international cast and the outstanding Greek crew. Harmonia is a milestone project in our journey as a company, pushing our boundaries further while staying true to our values of independence, boldness and fearless creativity.” Yannis Papadopoulos, President (Chair) of the Board of Directors of ERT, said: “International fiction co-productions are a key pillar of ERT’s strategy, as we invest in stories and creators with the potential to reach audiences beyond Greece. ERT productions are already making their way to international audiences. Harmonia takes this approach a step further. It is one of ERT’s most ambitious international co-productions, combining high production values with a story that has a clear international appeal. The fact that a series of this scale is being filmed entirely in Greece, with a Greek crew, is particularly significant to us at ERT. It demonstrates what the Greek production sector can deliver today, while creating a meaningful connection between international fiction and Greece’s creative and production talent”. Shooting takes place on location in Athens at Cape Sounio resort and Kapa2 Studios ahead of transmission in 2027. Executive producers are Peter Carlton and Peter Balm for Warp Films; Amanda Livanou and Isavella Alopoudi for Neda Film; and Lefteris Charitos, Hanna Jameson & Niamh Algar. RELATED
