![]() Greek journalist dies after self-immolation
A 67-year-old journalist who set herself on fire at the Zappeion Gardens in Athens on Wednesday has died from her injuries, it was announced on Friday.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning, when the woman, Avra Grigoriou, doused in a flammable substance, set herself alight in full view of bystanders. Members of the Presidential Guard (Evzones), who happened to be nearby, intervened quickly and managed to extinguish the flames, allowing her to be transported to hospital. Despite the medical team’s efforts, the woman succumbed to her burns on Thursday afternoon following a brief hospitalization at Laiko Hospital. The veteran reporter had worked for numerous Greek publications including Ethnos, Eleftherotypia, and state broadcaster ERT. The Hellenic Union of Daily Newspaper Journalists (ESHEA) announced her death, praising Grigoriou’s professional integrity and journalistic ethics. She is survived by her son. RELATED
